The Dogo Argentina can trace its roots back to Argentina in 1928 a Doctor named Antonio Nores Martinez wanted to create a dog that was suitable for big game hunting, especially wild boar, as well as a good watchdog and family companion.

And so he created the Dogo Argentino he was created first and foremost with the Cordoba Fighting Dog. This breed is extinct today but it was said that it was a large and ferocious dog with great hunting skills.

Martinez crossed it with the Great Dane, Boxer, Spanish Mastiff, old English bulldog, bull terrier, Pyrenean mastiff, English Pointer, Irish Wolfhounds and Dog Debordeaux and the Dogo Argentino Was born. It was recognized by AKC very recently in 2020.

Dogo Argentino is a large dog breed with a muscular body, a  huge face and a wide jaw. They have floppy ears which are usually cropped.

Socialization is a must for these dogs so they do not turn out to be aggressive make sure to start socializing at an early age with different types of people, pets, kids, etc. And you have to be consistent with socializing and training to keep them in check.

Be a leader-

Spend time with your dogo regularly and let them know that you are a leader. if they do not respect you they might not listen to you. So, from an early age teach them to be disciplined and be consistent with it.

They are huge and muscular dogs and they do eat a lot. So, it is important to give a well-balanced diet that has proteins, fats and carbs.

You can grove raw or cooked meats like chicken, beef, goat or lamb, eggs, cooked rice, and a moderate amount of cooked veggies like potatoes, cooked sweet potatoes, pumpkin, beans, spinach, etc.

They are very energetic dog breeds. So, they do need plenty of exercise to keep them physically and mentally fit.

It is important you provide them with at least 1 hr of exercise daily like walking, playing, freely running in the fenced yard or garden, pulling things, etc.

Grooming Dogo Argentino is not a big task as they have small hair.

So,  brushing them one time a week is very sufficient. And giving them a bath once every 2 months is more than enough.

Other than that check the ears to make sure there is no infection in the ear, check the teeth, etc.

In Public-

Whenever you take a dog outside always keep them on a leash as they are generally aggressive towards other dogs and as they have a high prey drive they might attack cats, squirrels or any other small animal.

Final Thoughts

Dogo Argentino has a bad reputation everywhere in the news and social media and they are banned in many places.

But in my opinion that’s not true in most cases, it is the owner’s mistake who doesn’t take proper care and not socialise them from an early age and also due to unethical breeding which some breeders do just for money purposes.

So, If they are socialized properly at an early age then they will become friendly towards other dogs also. They are excellent watchdogs.

They can help protect you and your family. They can become your personal bodyguard. After buying do take their best care to give them a healthy and happy life.
