About Ramanathapuram Mandai Dog Breed

History-

Although the history of the Ramanathapuram Mandai dog is barely known, it is thought that the breed has existed for many years in the Ramanathapuram region of Tamil Nadu, India. Farmers and shepherds in the region utilised these dogs in the past for hunting, herding, and guarding livestock. They were often employed as guard dogs to safeguard their masters’ possessions. The Maruthu Pandiyar brothers utilised Mandai dogs as war canines against the British army, attacking and biting both the British soldiers and their horses.

The Rajapalayam, Kanni, and Kombai, three native species of Tamil Nadu, are thought to have contributed to the breed’s origins.

Appearance-

Mandai is a large size dog breed. It has a strong muscular lean body with a deep chest and a long thick neck. It has a round skull and broad forehead with a long bose-shaped snout and has hanging ears which are far apart from each other. A pure Mandai dog will always have white colour paws and a white tip in the tail and also has a white mark on its face from the snout to the forehead and at the back of the neck. They are available in various colours like sambal(ash colour), black and white, pullimarai (black and white patch with black dots), palamarai sambal(white with ash patches), pulicharal(brindle colour), pillai (fawn), mayilai (white), red and ash mix colour, red, white and ash colour, tan and white, palamarai (white with red patches), karumsambal(black and ash colour mix), etc.

Mandai dog has a very long lifespan that can range from 10 to 15 years and some even can live up to 18 years. On average an adult Ramanathapuram Mandai dog can weigh between 28 to 40 kgs or 61 to 88 lbs and can grow between 27 to 29 inches or 2. 2 to 2.4 feet in height.

Temperament-

These breeds are known for their courage, endurance, and loyalty. These breeds are very protective and will protect the livestock and its owner at all costs. They have natural excellent guarding instincts which make them one of the best guard dogs to have. It s very important to socialize them with other people, dogs and pets so that they can get along and accept their presence.

Coat-

The coat type of the Mandai dog is short and shiny. They do not shed much so Brushing them only once a week is enough to get rid of loose dead hair and to keep the coat clean. Their short hair coat makes them ideal to live in the hot places of  India. However, in winter they do need a cozy place and some warm clothes to live comfortably.

Trainability-

Mandai dog is a very intelligent and independent thinker. Due to this, you may find some difficulty in training them. So, it is recommended to start the training of any self-thinking dog as early as possible. You have to be consistent and patient in order to train them effectively.

Health issues-

Mandai dogs are a very rough and tough dog breed. These Indian dog breeds are not prone to any of the genetic disorders, unlike foreign exotic breeds. They are purely resistant to all genetic disorders. However, they can sometimes get minor health issues like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, minor skin infections etc. So overall I would say that they are a very healthy, fit and strong dog breed.
