About English Mastiff

History and Origin-

An ancient dog breed with a colourful past is the English Mastiff. They are thought to have originated in Asia and were brought to Britain in the 6th century BC by Phoenician traders.

Romans employed the breed to fight in arenas and as war dogs over the course of time, developing and perfecting it. The Mastiff was a beloved hunting dog and estate and castle guardian in ancient England. Even in the Tower of London, they were employed to watch after captives.

The 19th century saw a decline in the popularity of the breed, but the early 20th century saw a resurgence thanks to devoted breeders. The English Mastiff is still a well-liked breed today and is renowned for its devotion, gentleness, and imposing appearance.

Large and strong, the English Mastiff is a breed of dog recognized for its huge frame and dominating size.

They have a short, dense coat that might be fawn, apricot, or brindle in colour. Their square-shaped, big head has a short nose and hanging jowls.

Their faces are wrinkled, and they wear a recognisable black mask that covers their eyes and muzzle.

The English Mastiff is a beautiful breed that produces wonderful family pets thanks to its devoted and loving nature.

Despite their large size, English Mastiffs are known for their calm and gentle temperament.

They are loyal, affectionate and protective of their family.  They are also known for their protective nature and will do everything to protect their family from any perceived threat.

However, they are not aggressive by nature and would only attack if they feel their family is in danger.

Lifespan and Size-

They typically stand between 27 to 33 inches in height and can weigh between 120 to 230 pounds, with males being larger than females.

They do not have a long life on average their lifespan generally ranges between 6 to 10 years.

Health problems-

English Mastiffs are susceptible to certain health issues, just like all dog breeds. Hip dysplasia, bloat, and cardiac troubles are some of the most typical health conditions that English Mastiffs experience. They must maintain a nutritious diet and engage in regular exercise to stay in good health.

Things To Know Before Deciding To Get an English Mastiff

Impulse buying-

As English Mastiffs are a giant breed it is very important to avoid impulse buying. It is a wise decision to contact a kennel with serious references.

It is outstandingly important that both parents, the male and the bitch as well should have screening results that they are knee and hip dysplasia free. It has the utmost importance.

The person who is thinking on to buy this breed has to know and should be aware of the fact that this is not a “cheap dog”.

Usually, good quality puppies are very expensive and so are their daily feeding and health care.

Not suitable for small Flats-

As they are very big dogs, I do not recommend keeping them in flats as they require a lot of space in a small flat. They are like a bull in a china shop. They need a lot of space to have comfort and to move around.

Do not over-exercise –

Do not walk them many miles when they are young. Just let them move as much as they want and feel comfortable before one year of age as their bone and joint structure is not fully developed yet and overexercise may develop bone and joint problems.

Once they are old enough they need a moderate amount of exercise at least 1 hour daily. Remember do not over-exercise and avoid going on long walks.

The proper handling and feeding of the puppy are very important. Never overfeed an English mastiff puppy  If you overfeed them early, you will have a giant dog with constant joint problems.

It is recommended to feed your English mastiff pup in their first  12 months with premium quality kibbles designed for giant dog breeds.

And it is advised to decrease the portion of the kibble by 20% which is mentioned on the dog food packet as these dog food manufacturers usually give a little higher number as the ideal daily portion as they want that our dog consumes the kibble as fast as possible.

Make sure to have a food scale decrease the recommended quantity by 20% and you will be good.

Again, if you overfeed them regularly, you develop an extremely fast growth of muscle and body weight, which is very harmful to their joints and their ligaments.

This can make them prone to dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders.

The short, dense coat of the English Mastiff is simple to care for. They moderately shed throughout the year, so regular brushing is necessary to maintain a healthy, glossy coat.

It is normally enough to brush your english mastiff once a week with a soft-bristled brush or grooming glove. They shouldn’t be bathed frequently; only when absolutely essential.

Regularly inspect their ears for indications of infection and clean them using an ear cleaner that has been recommended by a veterinarian.

Due to their propensity for drooling, English Mastiffs should have their facial folds cleaned frequently to avoid infection.

Regular nail trimming is also necessary to keep them from growing out too long and irritating them.

Training and socialisation-

To ensure that English Mastiffs develop into well-mannered and obedient pets, training and socialisation are crucial.

Given their size, it is essential to begin training and socialisation at a young age to keep them from growing too independent and challenging to control.

Basic obedience commands like seat, remain, and come should be taught using a positive reinforcement approach.

While English Mastiffs can occasionally be difficult, consistency and patience are essential when training them.

To keep them from growing up to be scared or aggressive, it’s crucial to socialise them with humans and other animals from a young age.
